Area Code 959
Bell Laboratories and AT&T initiated the foundation of an area code system in the year 1940. In spite of being introduced in the year 1940, this area code came into effect much later in the year 1947. This area coding system was popularly referred to as the NANP or North American Numbering Plan. In fact, it is also believed that North American Numbering Plan or NANP took over Canada and the United States. NANP is the well known agency that plays a dominant role in assigning phone numbers.
In the year 1947, states as well as provinces that were associated with only one area code were offered three digit numbers as area codes. These area codes had zero as their middle digit. For instance, the area code of Florida was entitled as 305 whereas the area code of Connecticut was entitled as 203. During this period, the total number of the area codes was restricted to 86. States as well as provinces that were associated with more than a single area code were assigned three digit numbers as codes. These area codes had one as their middle digit. For example, the area code of some areas of California was allocated 213 whereas some areas of California were allocated 916. In the similar manner the area code of some regions of New York was offered the area code 518 and some region of New York was assigned the area code 212. The first as well as the third digits were offered only after taking into consideration the population density of the city as well as the region that is grouped under a specific area code. The areas that were quite densely populated were allocated the lowest numbers as area codes. The area covering the New York City was allocated the area code 212 whereas the surrounding areas were assigned the area code 914.
Area code 959 is believed to be the telephone area code for numbers serving the state of Connecticut. This area code was introduced in the year 1999, August. With time, it is expected that this area code will take over the cities such as Norwich, Hartford, Bristol as well as the major portion of the eastern as well as northern Connecticut that are presently grouped under the area code 860. In simple words you can say that the area code 959 will take over the area code 860. The exact date when this area code needs to be implemented is still a mystery. But, it was previously announced in 2009 April that the other area codes of Connecticut will include area code 475 as an overlay in the year 2009, 12th December.
The Public Utility Commission of Connecticut proposed an overlay of area code in 1999, August for the area code 860…the new area code that was decided to be brought into limelight is the area code 959. However, this proposal was kept to a hold for ten years or so because of number conservation measures in 2008, September. It was declared that the area code 959 will overlay the area code 860 between two years. In 2009 March, it was declared that 203/475 overlay was scheduled to be activated in 2009, 12th of December. It was also declared that the 860/959 overlay scheduled to be activated by 2011.
