Area code 901
The area code 901 has been assigned to the state of Tennessee in the United States of America. This area code was originally assigned to the entire state before it was limited to the usage of south-west corner of the state. The idea of covering the entire state by one area code was announced under the North American Numbering plan in the year 1947.
Before the decision was taken, the distribution of area code was different. It was in the year 1954 the area code 901 was restricted to the western region of Tennessee. Two-Third of the eastern Tennessee was assigned with the area code of 615. The scope of previous code was narrowed down as the new code was introduced to facilitate distribution of services and help distinguish geographical location.
It was in the year 2001, the area code 901 became mandatory for certain areas. Since that year, the area code served Shelby and Tipton Counties and also portions of Fayette, Lauderdale and Hardeman Counties. All theses counties are under a district which very roughly corresponds with the Tennessee portion of the Memphis metropolitan area. Apart from this there are other remaining areas which have been reassigned with the area code 901 which covers several counties , cities and suburbs of the state of Tennessee.
The state of Tennessee has undergone several alterations as far as area code is conduct. Much of these alterations were caused by the increase in population and the growing need of connections from the population. With the diminishing collection of the same codes, new codes were assigned and in some cases overlaid. In case of Tennessee, new codes were assigned to certain places which required new codes.
The growing population and the growing demand of connections gave rise to a number of internet and telecommunication service providers.
