Both the area codes 617 and 857 are the area codes that cover the Boston Metro area of Massachusetts. The area code 617 was once known to cover the entire region of Greater Boston which is located in the eastern Massachusetts area which reached beyond the I-495 loop. Right now the area code only covers the city of Boston and some of the suburbs that surround the city.
The area code 617 was not the initial code of the area in and around Boston. It is a result of the split of another code which existed before this was accepted.
