Area code 848
At the behest of the North American Numbering Plan Administration, the Area Code 848 was assigned to the New Jersey Shore region in the year 2001. The original area code of this place was 732 as a result of a split in New Jersey area. The code was created on June 1, 1997. With the depletion of the pool of 732 numbers, area code 848 was overlaid on the old code. The new area code covers small areas of North/ Central Jersey. Green Brook, Dunellen, Middlesex, East Brunswick, Edison, Metuchen, New Brunswick, Woodbridge, Perth Amboy, Carteret, South Brunswick, North Brunswick, Rahway and carolina Colonia are some of the counties o which come under the area code 848.
According to NANP, the effort of introducing the new area codes was required because of an increasing competition in the local phone service market. The introduction was also because of the growing demand by the public for additional telephone numbers.
This is a general all purpose code. The newly assigned code covers several areas. According to the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) the overlay of new codes was a part of the area code relief plan which was recommended by a telecommunications industry group. This is one of the first overlay plan approved for New Jersey.
While structuring an overlay relief plan, an additional area code is assigned to the same geographic area that serves as an existing area code. In spite of the new area code being assigned, all existing numbers retains the current area code except new telephone customers applying for local phone service who may be assigned a telephone number that falls in the new overlay area code.
