Area Code 813
The area code 813 is an area code of Florida and it covers eleven counties in the United States of America. The history of the area codes began with the introduction of the North American Numbering Plan in 1940. Under this Plan the States and Provinces in the United States and Canada that had a single area code were allotted a three digit area code with 0 as the middle number. Those States and Provinces that had more than one area code were assigned 1 as the middle number. The first and third digits of the area code number were based upon the density of population in a particular region. Local numbers and area codes were not permitted to begin with the digits of 1 and 0. The second number of the code was always 1 and 0. This helped to identify whether the call was a local one or a long distance one. The North American Numbering Plan did not cover the areas of Hawaii, the Caribbean and Alaska. The total number of area codes that were introduced at that time was 86 and the services of the Plan began in 1947.
With the passage of time these area codes had to be further split into many area codes to provide better and improved phone services to the people living in the regions. The splits in the area code depended on the population density and the economic growth of the areas concerned. Today there are around 300 area codes in the United States and Canada. The second phase of development of the North American Numbering Plan began in 1995. In this stage of development the area codes could have any number of three digits and that could also include 0 and 9 as the second digit.
The area served by the NANP is divided into smaller Numbering Plan Areas (NPAs) and they are each identified by a three-digit NPA code which is generally called an area code.
