Area code 805
An area code can be referred to as the second identity of any region, county, city or state. The system of area code was found by Bell Laboratories and AT&T in the 1940's. However it went into effect in the year 1947. It was known as the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). The United States and Canada were included in it. The first area code to be assigned to the United States of America was 201. However the growing demand more telephone numbers led to its split in the year 1958 It was allotted to New Jersey and covered parts of Hudson and Bergen counties. A new area code 609 was thus formed. While the southern half of New Jersey obtained 609, the northernmost counties retained the old area code 201.
The area which is represented by a particular area code is considered as the Numbering Plan Area of the area code. Basically, the area codes in the United States of America and Canada do not begin with the digits 0 or 1. This is because these digits are used as prefix to the North American long distance calls operator assistance, or feature codes. Until the year 1995, the area codes had the digits 0 or 1 as there middle number. But the new codes that were allotted from the year 1995 were formed of digits from 2 to 8. Initially, by rule the area code of a particular region was not supposed to end in the digit '0'. This restriction was eventually removed due to the large number of advances made in the technology of telephone switching.
In the year 1957, the area code 805 was formed due to the split of the area code 213, which was serving Los Angeles. The telephone area code 805 serves the state of California. Though the state is covered by 28 different area codes, 12 of the counties are included in the coverage of the area code 805.
These are counties like San Diego, Santa Clara, San Luis Obispo, San Joaquin, and San Joaquin among others. Including cities like Guadalupe, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, Point Mugu Nawc, Santa Margarita, and Sherman Oaks, 70 cities in the state of California are served by the area code 805. In addition, few southernmost portions of Monterey County, along with some small portion of Los Angeles County are also served by area code 805.
This area code was further divided in February 13, 1999 and the inland areas like Santa Clarita Valley, San Joaquin Valley, and Antelope Valley of area code 805 now began to be served by the area code 661. One unique thing about the area code 805 is that is also serves the U.S. military facilities in Republic of the Marshall Islands, Kwajalein with a Paso Robles prefix. This arrangement is expected to have been originated due to Kwajalein's close-ties with Air Force Base of Vandenberg in the missile test program.
