Bell Laboratories and AT&T were the agencies which introduced the concept of area codes. The idea was put forward in the year 1940; however it was put into action in the year 1947. The system was known as North American Numbering Plan, abbreviated as NANP. The regions of the United States of America and Canada were included in it. During the year 1947, only one single area code used to represent the entire state or province. In total there were just 86 area codes through out the States and Canada. There were of course some provinces or states that required more than one area code and were allotted the same.
The new area code provided to them consisted of three digits with '1' as the middle digit. However, the first and the third digits depended up on the population of the area. The area with a greater population had the lowest digits and the area with lesser population had greater digits in their area code. For instance the area code 212 was allotted to New York City as it had denser population; and the neighboring areas with thinner population were represented by '914'. The explanation provided for this kind of numbering was that the phone at those times worked on rotary dialing system. The numbers like 1 or 2 took shorter "dial pulls". Hence the logic that they held was, cities with most population would be called more, so the attempt in calling people in those regions should be less. 403, 204, 205, 416, and 415 are a few of the original United States and Canada.
