Area Code 507

The North American Numbering Plan simplified and facilitated direct dialing of long distance calls. In order to implement direct dialing calls, the NANP was created and instituted in 1947 by AT&T, also known as the Bell System, the U.S. telephone semi-monopoly. At first, the codes were used only by long-distance operators; the first customer-dialed calls using area codes did not occur until November 10, 1951, when the first directly-dialed call was made from Englewood, New Jersey to Alameda, California. Direct dialing was gradually instituted throughout the country, and by the mid-1960s, it was commonplace in most of the larger cities. While The NANP serves different areas, some densely populated and some sparsely, the importance of various service codes must not be undermined as it is the telephonic gateway of even segregated regions into the outside world.

Area code 507, established back in 1947 according to the NANP, is the telephone numbering plan code for the southern part of Minnesota, including cities such as Rochester, Mankato, Worthington, Fairmont and Austin. It was the third area code created for use in the state in 1954, following the original Area code 218 and Area code 612.

The region directly bordered code 612 (located to the north) until that area code was divided up in the 1990s. The western half of 507 bordered area code 320 starting in 1996, and then later came to border area code 651 (1998) and area code 952 (2000). The northern border of 507 was modified slightly so that growing communities in and near the Twin Cities would be more closely linked with that region by telephone. Area code 612 has now shrunken down to just include Minneapolis and a few surrounding suburbs, and no longer borders 507.

Before the split, area code 218 was shown as extending down the entire western boundary of Minnesota (along the North & South Dakota borders) to the Iowa border and 612 was also shown extending down to Iowa. At that point of time, area code 507 did not exist. Apparently, 507 took parts of 218 and 612, and 612 took part of 218.

Offering good value for money services in this area are big names like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast who offer both landline and cellular phone services, apart from dial up and broadband Internet services, and even Cable TV services.

In the field of Internet Service Providers come names of nationwide networks like Spin Internet, ConnectTo.net and 100MegaBit.com. Another cheap provider is 1095.net, the name of the provider clearly explaining their tariff where customers can avail unlimited Internet for a measly $10.95 per month.

Each of these service providers offer their customers a wide array of plans and tariff schemes to choose from, for one to select a plan that will suit them best. Also available from the stable of these service providers are advanced features like voicemail, and caller line identification service for telephone, and Wi Fi connection for the Internet. Each of these service providers have experienced staff who will provide expert advice and even establish a network at home or a business organization as need may arise.
