Area Code 313
According to the original area code planning, 86 area codes were assigned to the different states of USA and Canada. The use of these area codes was necessary to avoid any confusion in the telephone service areas. AT&T and Bells Laboratories were responsible for the formulation of the area codes.
The planning of the area codes continued from the early 1940s. However, the plan was executed only in 1947. The larger states got multiple area codes while the comparatively smaller ones were allotted only one. The name of the original plan was North American Numbering Plan and the area codes were known as numbering plan areas.
Area code 313 was one of the area codes assigned to the state of Michigan, USA. It covered the whole of the Metro Detroit region along with the southern parts of the area known as Michigan's 'Thumb' and the Flint region as well. This huge expanse of land was within the area code 313 initially.
With the increase in population and subsequent increase in the demand for more telecommunication links, the territory under area code 313 was split off. The first change happened in 1993. The Flint region, the suburbs in the northern parts and the 'Thumb' region were allotted a new area code, namely area code 810.
The next alteration came into effect in 1997 when the territory under area code 313 was again split off. The new area code 734 was carved out of the region. This area code was assigned to parts of the counties like Wayne, Washtenaw, Monroe and more that were initially within the coverage of area code 313.
The area code 313 still retains 9 counties of Michigan. Some of these counties that fall within area code 313 are Genesee, Oakland, Wayne, Livingston, Monroe and so on. Although a sizeable portion of the territory has been split into different area codes, area code 313 retains the city of Detroit, the largest city of Michigan.
The cities located within the boundaries of area code 313 are known as the hubs of the telecommunications network of Michigan. The area code covers 47 cities of Michigan. Some of them are Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Canton, Grand Rapids, Dearborn, Flint, Dearborn Heights, and others.
