Area Code 251

The concept of area code is linked to the telecom services and it is used to identify a particular region. The area code acts as a number which is used to identify a particular area among several others. This coding system of providing different places with different numeric codes was designed and put into practice by the AT&T Bell Laboratories in the year 1947. It was called the North American Numbering Plan and it is called in the same way even today. The system of NANP was specifically structured as an integrated telephone area numeric coding system for 24 different countries in the North America consisting of Canada, the Caribbean island countries, and USA along with its territories across the world.

When the area codes were launched in 1947, the actual area codes were 86 in number. Over the years it has now 280 with the growing demand for diversification to shed off congestion, increasing number of subscribers and increase in the telephone call traffic.

At the time of introduction of the area code a number of states were provided with one single three digit area code. The area codes had the digit 0 in the middle like Florida which was provided with 305 and Connecticut which was designated 203. There were states which were provided with two or three area codes. Two or more area codes were provided to those states which had a larger concentration of subscribers or increased flow of telephone call traffic. Such states had the digit 1 in the middle as in 213 and 916 of California and 518 and 216 of New York.
