Area code 215
Planned and designed by AT&T and Bell Laboratories, the implementation of Numbering Plan Area or Area codes took place in 1947. At that time, 18 area codes were created for 18 major cities of America. Today, we cannot think of our lives without different telecommunication devices, but it was merely twelve years more than half a century ago, the technology was so primitive. We have scaled heights in communication sector, but in the recent history only.
With the passage of time, the need for more area codes cropped up. There were few factors responsible for that. First of all, the city grew and along with that population, too. There were more households hence more requirements. Then there was introduction of dial-up connection for Internet and fax machines which needed additional telephone connections to operate. Lastly there was cellular phone service which revolutionized the concept of communication. All these contributed to the exhaustion of area codes. As a result, more area codes were created by splitting the already existing ones or overlay plans were executed.
The allotment of area codes has a logic against it. In 1947, when first lot of area codes were created people used phones with rotary dial. It took several minutes to make a call. When area codes were created, they were assigned to those major cities which had largest traffic of incoming and outgoing calls. Cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Washington were few of them. These cities were assigned area codes with low digits like 1, 2 and 3 because the rotary phones could dial these numbers fast. Since maximum numbers of calls in the whole nation were directed to these places, authorities decided to allot those numbers which would take minimum time to connect. In rotary phones low digit numbers took minimum time to return to their original position hence quickening the procedure.
The scarcely populated cities of states like Tennessee or Vermont got area codes with high digit numbers starting with 0, 7, 8 and 9. The call traffic to and from this direction was relatively low, hence this arrangements was made. But, very soon this logic lost its importance as touch-tone phones took over the rotary dial phones. Now, callers got through the lines with the tone being entered instantly.
Area code 215 is the code for Philadelphia and adjoining suburbs in its north. Philadelphia is the capital city for Pennsylvania. This area code belongs to the first original set that was created back in 1947. However, on July 1, 1997, to comply with the heavy demands of more connections, an overlay code 267 came into practice.
Under the area code 215 comes five counties- Leigh, Montgomery, Berks, Bucks and Philadelphia. The telephone companies in this area doing good business are Verizon Wireless, Comtel Wireless, Cavalier Telephone Authorized, Wireless Zone, Liberty One Realty Corp, Marshall Telephone and Network, Commonwealth Telephone Company, Bell of Pennsylvania, Sprint, Vonage and many more.
