So, NANP includes USA and the territories, Bermuda, Canada and sixteen countries of Caribbean Islands. According to this design, the first three digits of a 10-digit phone number would be area code and rest seven digits form the number that guides the caller to the desired location on a PSTN. PSTN is the Public Switched Telephone Network which takes you finally to the local network.
The concept of Numbering Plan Areas, propounded by AT&T and Bell Laboratories came into being in 1947 when the country was divided into 18 area codes. These codes were allotted to major cities of United States of America. Area code 202 is one code from the first original set of area codes.
In October 1947, this code was allotted to Washington DC. This area code has not seen any split nor has any overlay area code been included. According to the reports of North American Numbering Plan Administration, this area code is well capable of meeting the requirements of this region till 2020. Since there are no other area codes in this region, any call made within the district falls under local call category. Even dialing 7-digit number is allowed but to connect the call area code is needed.
When area code 202 was created, authorities had unofficially planned to keep it as a substitute area code for the vicinities of Virginia and Maryland suburbs. Their official area codes are 703 and 301 respectively. This allowed local calls made by dialing 7 digits only. But October 1, 1990 onwards, the provision of making calls in the suburbs with prefix 202 ended when the numbers exhausted. With this also started 10-digit number dialing for local calls between two area codes.
